Day one, with the laptop already working
Your new engineer in Lagos starts on Monday. Between the signed contract and that Monday, a machine has to be bought, enrolled in your management, boxed with its accessories and put in their hands. None of that happens by itself.
What has to be true before the start date
Not much, and all of it has a lead time. The specification agreed. The device sourced. Its serial bound to your MDM tenant so it enrols itself when the employee opens it. The accessories in the same box. And a delivery arranged with a person who may still be working out their notice somewhere else.
Start the week before and it is comfortable. Start on the Friday and it is a scramble that the new hire experiences as their first impression of your company.

What the employee experiences
A box arrives on a day they agreed. They open it, connect to wifi, sign in with the account you gave them, and the machine sets itself up into your management with your apps and policies already applied. No setup call, no screen-sharing session with somebody four time zones away, no local admin password to be improvised.
And when they leave
The same record carries through. The device is already registered against them with everything that was issued, so offboarding starts from a list that is already right rather than from somebody trying to remember what they were given.

- How long do you need before a start date?
- Tell us the date and we will tell you a real one for that specification and that location, rather than a range. The ordinary constraint is sourcing, not enrolment or delivery.
- Can you onboard several hires at once?
- Yes. A standard build per job family means every device for that family is sourced, enrolled and packed identically, which is faster and less error-prone than doing them one at a time.
- What if the new hire already has a company device?
- It is booked in, checked for locks from a previous owner or tenant, enrolled into your MDM, and recorded against them — the same record either way.
